Properties of Nickel
  • Nickel is not corroded in the atmosphere but it is highly corrosive in air containing sulfur dioxide.
  • It is strong against distilled water, fresh water and seawater.
  • The corrosion resistance of neutral and alkaline salt liquids is also good, but it is about 0.127mm / year.
  • It is eroded into an aqueous solution of oxidizing salts (Ferric chloride, Cupric chloride, Mercuric chloride, Hypochlorite, etc.)
  • Sulfuric acid is not eroded, but corrosion is promoted by the presence of oxidants such as air, heavy chromates.
  • In hydrochloric acid it changes depend on the amount and concentration of air incorporated.
  • Corrosion against organic acids is strong.
  • It slowly oxidizes in air above 500 ° C, but increases in oxidation above 750 ° C.
